Tito Mirelli (Male, Lead, 30’s - up, should be able to sing or fake it well, speaks with an Italian accent) is imposing as the world's most renowned opera tenor, and notorious ladies man.
Max (Male, Lead, late 20’s - late 30’s, should be able to sing or fake it well) Saunders' long-suffering assistant and Maggie's suitor, forced to take Tito's place in the role of Pagliacci.
Henry Saunders (Male, Lead, 50’s - up) The Cleveland Grand Opera's general manager. Father to Maggie. An authoritarian and blowhard who often loses his temper at the slightest mishap
Maggie (Female, Lead, late 20’s to late 30’s) Saunders' daughter, and Max's girlfriend. She has a great admiration for Tito. She is pretty and quirky.
Maria Mirelli (Female, Supporting, 30’s - up, speaks with an Italian accent) Think: Sophia Loren, Maria is Tito's long-suffering wife, with an "Italian temper". Leaves Tito early in the play, but ultimately returns to him. Loves Tito, despite his philandering.
Diana (Female, Supporting, late 20’s - up) Diana is The opera's ingenue soprano, who is "flinging her way" to the top. A seductive woman (and she knows it).
Bellhop (Male, Featured, 17 - up, speaks Italian surprisingly well, though not required, should be able to sing or fake it) is A comic relief character who has an ongoing feud with Saunders. An obnoxious opera fan, the bellhop keeps showing up at the hotel suite at the wrong moment, trying to get an autograph and a photo of Tito Merelli.
Julia (Female, Featured, 40’s - up) is Chairwoman of the Cleveland Opera Guild, who considers herself a "grande dame." She wears a silver dress which, Saunders says, makes her look "like the Chrysler Building."
